ASEIC implemented ‘KOICA-GIZ Joint Capacity Development Program Green Economic Development (Philippi
04 Aug 2016

ASEIC implemented ‘KOICA-GIZ Joint Capacity Development Program – Green Economic Development (Philippines)’ alongside the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) from July 20 to July 29.

This 10-day study visit program invited core group of representatives in the Philippines, mainly consisting of central and province-based public officials of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and private sector delegates.

The program was aimed to enhance their capacity to transfer into green economy in the Philippines by understanding green growth experiences of the major Korean ministries and organizations as well as sharing global perspectives of green economy.

Their accommodation based at KOICA ICC (International Cooperation Center), the participants traveled to Seoul, Daejeon, Jeju, Songdo (Incheon) in order to visit relevant organizations and sites in which they actively communicated with Korean counterparts and established in-depth understanding of Korean green growth policy and energy technology R&D status.

Due to islands-based geological feature and SMEs-driven economic structure of the Philippines, the coursework focused specifically on energy policy of Jeju Province where ‘Carbon-Free Jeju Island by 2030’ is now being proactively initiated as well as institutional framework to support green capacity of SMEs in Korea.

During the field trip to Jeju, the participants visited Gapado (Gapa Island), the first energy self-sufficient island in Korea, in order to grasp microgrid technology using renewable energy and energy storage systems (ESS). Following this on-site visit to Gapado, a group activity facilitated the participants’ discussion to develop microgrid project proposals for local communities in the Philippines.

Throughout the visit program, several discussion workshops were steered in three groups to establish green economy strategies under three major themes of Philippine industries : energy, tourism and agriculture-food.

On the last day of the program, July 29, participants concluded the 10-day program with the presentation of the final action plans at Courtyard Mariotte Hotel in Pangyo. Following the action plan presentation and closing ceremony, was held where Korean SMEs, Philippine SMEs and relevant business associations shared their business experiences and explored business opportunities of mutual cooperation.
