UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) convened the third session of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development on 3-5 April 2016, at the UN Conference Center of Bangkok, Thailand. The main theme of the forum was “Regional priorities for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific”. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by UN Member States in September 2015. Included in the Agenda are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as, goals on clean energy and sustainable consumption and production with associated targets.

For the forum, around 300 participants including UN member states delegation, UN institutions and other stakeholders participated to discuss the regional priorities on SDGs, and discussed detailed issues and especially made recommendation on scientific and technological innovation for sustainable development and on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. As an outcome of the forum, it defined a regional road map for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the conclusions and recommendations of the forum will also be informed to the global debate at the high-level political forum on sustainable development planned be held in New York, July of 2016.

ASEIC participated in the forum as an UN Global Partner, to demonstrate the ASEM Eco-Innovation Index research that can support implementation and monitoring of SDGs in Asia-Europe region. A publication booth was hosted together with Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum) to display ASEI 2015 research poster, and the ASEI publication was distributed and promoted to interested participants.

The poster presentation engaged high interests and feedback from attendees at the forum, especially as a research that gathers Asian developing countries’ data and information on sustainable development. As a useful means to monitor SDGs implementation in Asia-Europe region, ASEIC will continue to collect data on eco-innovation and SDGs in partnership with ASEM member countries and other international institutes in 2016.
