ASEIC participated in the forum on global responses towards climate change and clean technology
On the 17th of July, ASEIC participated in the forum on global responses towards climate change and clean technology. The forum was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Korea, and organized by the Green Technology Center Korea (GTC-K). About 50 people from various organizations related to the field of environment and energy in Korea participated in the forum.
Mr. Hyun-Soo Yoon, the head of the Climate Change and Environmental Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, talked about the international trends regarding Post-2020, GHG reduction and climate change responses of the major economies. Mr. Yoon suggested three points to cope with such a trend effectively; first, sectoral and thematic approaches to GHG reduction are needed along with the preparation for the Post-2020, Second, climate change responses should be closely intertwined with economic goals and policies and lastly, a preemptive response and economic paradigm shift are necessary.
Ms. Hwa-Jin Han, the vice-president of the Korean Environmental Institute, introduced the current Korean policy on climate change. These can be represented with the three key concepts, mitigation, adaptation and capacity building. Professor Seo-Yong Jeong from Korea University argued that Korea should prudently design its role as a middle power country in order to achieve national interests as well as global cooperation at the same time.
